I'm on Spring Break right now, so I invited my dear friend, Amber, and her son Payton to go to Hogle Zoo with Aven and me. Payton is only six months older than Aven, so they had all kinds of toddler fun together:

The Pain of Improvement
I have recently been going through some pretty significant growing pains at school. I have been eagerly awaiting these new changes all year, but it doesn't make it any easier to go through the process. The day I was scheduled to set up my Art Fair I came in to piles of posters, papers, and books in rather inconvenient places all over my room. The painters, who had told me the day before that they weren't sure when they would get to my room, had stripped my walls and shelves of their contents in order to prep my room to be painted. So not only was I trying to make my room resemble a usable classroom I was also getting my Art Fair set up in the library with the help of my favorite free labor- my students. Saying that I was slightly stressed and anxious about the situation is a pretty big understatement. The next Monday I came in to what you see below:
The painters had spent the weekend making my walls (including my old, stained cork board that makes up about 85% of my walls), shelves, and cabinets look beautiful but in their wake was a disaster. These painters don't clean up after themselves. After two solid hours of cleaning while trying to teach my classes at the same time some amount of sanity had returned to the room. Along with fresh paint some other even more significant and exciting changes have taken place. School built in 1958, meet the 21st century:
That is my new audio enhancement system. With this system shouting to get the attention of students in a noisy classroom is a thing of the past. There are four ceiling mounted speakers that project the sound from a lavaliere I wear around my neck. Thanks to this system a quiet talking voice carries the same weight of "I NEED EVERYONE TO BE QUIET AND LISTEN!"
This picture shows off my lovely new white walls. I will never again need to defy death in order to cover stained cork board with poster paper. You can also see two of my sweet speakers.
Above you can see my ceiling mounted projector. I wasn't sure that I was going to get a lot of use out it because I only used my projector on a cart once every couple weeks, but I find that the convenience of it has led me to use it almost everyday. One of the best new things in my room is a document camera, which is like a modern overhead projector that hooks into the ceiling mounted projector and allows me to do project demonstrations at my desk while the class watches on the big screen.
The result:
A happier and more effective teacher. Hopefully.

I've Created A Monster
Not that long ago I could pull out the camera and take pictures of Aven playing and she would just keep doing what she was doing. I used to have a hard time getting her to actually look at the camera. A couple weeks ago, while taking some pictures of her, I was encouraging her to make silly faces and I took a picture of each silly face she made- it was great fun.
Well, now whenever I pull out the camera she stops what she is doing to give me the cheesiest grin her facial muscles will allow. She looks like she might be in pain, but she's just doing exactly what I taught her to do. Cute, but a tad bit frustrating.

R.I.P. Ian's 2011 Ski Season
When I met him at the bottom of the Gondola he was unable to move his right arm without pain (why is it always the right arm with this guy?). We went back to Salt Lake and he headed to the Instacare. As usual the instacare doctor had no clue what was wrong but could only guess he had torn his rotator cuff or something in that vicintiy. He was given a sling and told to make an appointment with an Orthopaedic specialist. He finally got in to see someone 6 days later. She suspected a break and sent him for an MRI since the x-ray didn't show anything. The verdict finally came in: a hairline fracture at the top of the humerus where the rotator cuff attaches. It turns out that everytime he had tried to use his arm over the last week and felt pain the bone was actually seperating at the fracture, preventing healing from taking place. He is now in a sling for the next 4-8 weeks with strict instructions for very limited movement in that arm. I'm really hoping for four weeks.
Since Ian and I still have one pass each to the Canyons I guess I'll be skiing by myself one more day at my "favorite" ski resort. Maybe I'll just ski in the morning and spend the afternoon eating Bruges waffles outside Red Pine lodge.

Recently
I thought it was about time for an update of life in the Bailey household:
Aven is now 21 months old and her vocabulary is growing every day. I can no longer keep track of all the new words she is learning. She is starting to repeat phrases that we say- always fun to hear. Aven also has a little boyfriend at daycare. I was informed one day that Beau (the center director's son who is in Aven's class) thinks that she is the best thing ever and talks about her all the time, saying cute things such as "Aven nice". She has been asking for Beau all weekend. I'm just really glad that she is in such a great daycare and gets to spend the day with sweet, caring teachers and fun playmates. Lastly, she is getting really good at 'please' and 'thank you'- especially 'thank you', which actually sounds a lot like 'dit doo' when she says it.
In other Bailey family news we are putting our house back on the market in a couple weeks. Send positive vibes our way- we really feel ready for a larger house! Other than that Ian and I have been trying to go skiing as much as possible, which so far this year has been four times. I know it doesn't sound like much, but when you're working full time and caring for a toddler almost every minute you aren't at work four times is actually pretty good.
Enjoy some recent photos of our progeny:
Aven with her box of Valentines on Valentine's day morning. It turns out that I was the only parent in her class who gave out home-made Valentine cards. I guess that's an occupational hazard of being an art teacher- I home-make everything I can.
Sliding at the park. She's getting into that stage of having to be tricked away from the playground. Luckily Liberty Park has a great Koi pond near the playground so I can usually lure her away without any tears if I promise a visit to the fish.
She has really been into painting lately. She'll paint for a half hour straight- I can't think of anything else that holds her attention that long at this point in time.
